Call to Worship

This is the place, and this is the time:
Here and now, God waits to break into our experience
to change our minds,
to change our hearts,
to change our ways,
to help us see the world and the whole of life in a new light,
to fill us with forgiveness, hope, and certainty for the future.
So, Here and now, let us praise God.  AMEN.

Hymn

Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown
UM Hymnal #386 – words are below the video screen

Words:  Charles Wesley, 1742
Traditional Scottish Melody
Video performed and produced by Mack Bailey on his YouTube Channel
Provided to YouTube by CDBaby, on his album: Why I’m Here ℗ 2003 Mack Bailey

Come, O thou Traveler unknown,
whom still I hold, but cannot see!
My company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee.
With thee all night I mean to stay,
and wrestle till the break of day;
with thee all night I mean to stay,
and wrestle till the break of day.

I need not tell thee who I am;  my misery and sin declare.
Thyself hast called me by my name,
look on thy hands and read it there.
But who I ask thee, who art thou?
Tell me thy name and tell me now  (repeat)

Yield to me now, for I am weak, but confident in self despair!
Speak to my heart, in blessing speak,
be conquered by my instant prayer.
Speak or thou never hence shalt move,
and tell me if thy name is Love.  (repeat)

‘Tis Love! ‘tis Love!  Thou diedst for me,
I hear thy whisper in my heart.
The morning breaks, the shallows flee,
pure, Universal Love though art.
To me, to all, thy mercies move;
thy nature and thy name is Love.  (repeat)

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever.
Amen.

Worship for July 26, 2020

Welcome

Welcome to worship with the Chehalis United Methodist Church!  During the pandemic we can meet each other in more novel ways, such as this worship page.  As you follow this order of worship there are many videos along the way for your use, pause and click the arrow to start them.  Often you will find words for you to follow underneath the video on your page – the part in bold is for you, the congregation. Most Hymns have the words on the video. May God bless you today and every day, and give you the stamina to be the people of God during this time.

Prelude

Nocturne, Op. 9 No. 2  – Chopin

Vincent van Gogh painted “The Starry Night, the year before he died.
Chopin composed this popular Nocturne what he was about 20 years old.

Call to Worship

Based on Romans 8:31-38

Read the Call to Worship and Opening Prayer on your own, or follow as Dave and Debbie Campbell lead you this video. (Words to the Call and the Opening Prayer are below the video on this post. Follow Debbie for the part in bold that you, the people, say.)

If God is for us, who can be against us?
Can anyone?
Who can bring a charge against us?
It is God who justifies!
Who can condemn?
It is Christ who gave himself for us!
Who will separate us from the love of Christ?
Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
No!  In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
AMEN.
Amen.   It’s time to worship our ever-loving God!

Opening Prayer

God, we are warmed by your sun, encircled by your love,
blessed by your presence, sustained by your Spirit.
You gather us into a sacred circle of life
and give us a song in our hearts,
laughter on our lips and kindness in our touch.
With praise and thanksgiving,
we offer you our dreams and our deeds
and this sacred time of worship.
In the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Call to Worship

The love of God is more splendid than purple mountain majesties.
God’s word of grace fills the spacious skies.
The amber waves of grain remind us of God’s abundant care.
Above the fruited plain is God’s eternal joy in anyone
who turns from sin and follows the path of truth.

In every nation, in every heart, God is working for good.
Let our songs rise, and let God’s praise be heard from sea to shining sea.

Opening Prayer

Creator and Ruler of humankind:
While songs of our nation’s birth ring in our hearts,
remind us to celebrate above all the oneness of the race you have created
and the openness of the church you have loved.
And help us, who are your church in this place,
to be truly open to all your children and to pray
for the coming of the day when all shall be one
in him who has broken down all the walls that now divide us,
even Jesus Christ, the Lord of both church and world.  Amen.

Sermon

“That’s no yoke!”   Rev. Karla Fredericksen
   (with Romans 7:14-25)

Prayer of Confession and Pardon:

Leader 1:  Sometimes, our lives seem out of control.
Leader 2:  We know what to do…
ALL:  but we just don’t do it.

Leader 1:  Sometimes, we are torn between doing what’s right,
        and doing what’s popular.
Leader 2:  We know what to do…
ALL:   but we just don’t do it.

Leader 1:  Other times we hide from doing what is right,
hoping that God won’t notice.
Leader 2:  We know what to do…
ALL:  but we just don’t do it.

Leader 1:  Fortunately, God knows us, understands us,
and loves us just the same.
His yoke is easy, and his burden is light.
Leader 2:  So we can rejoice, knowing that God also forgives us,
takes our burdens, and sets us free.
ALL:   Thanks be to God.  Amen.

New! REIMAGINING GROUP
Chosen by the Church Council

Meeting Saturday, July 11, at 10:00 AM for the first time, this group was chosen by the Church Council. They will be meeting via zoom technology (a few from Boadway Hall via zoom). The group will begin working on a plan for reopening when the opportunity arrives. (That is, when the new cases of COVID-19 have subsided enough to be safe.) Our conference has given guidelines and we need to fill in some of the details of when, where, how and by what safety and sanitation rules will be abide. And our plan must be approved by the District Superintendent.

I think everyone is looking forward to the day this can happen – but we are cautious to be sure that it can happen safely. Just be aware that this will be a “new normal,” not the gatherings that we have come to love as they were. In addition to wearing masks and distancing, we will miss live singing, and put our hymnals and other items from the pews away for a long time. Our communion will have to continue to be “virtual” for some time, also, until an acceptable alternative is created or found, and approved.

We can look at this as our opportunity to be innovative and creative in our planning and implementing of a new kind of gathering! Prayers for God to guide us, are welcomed!

Wednesdays –
Bible Study: UNRAVELED

From “A Sanctified Art”

Feeling a little “unraveled” by the happenings in the world?  Or unsettled and un-anchored without a spiritual support through Bible Study?  You are not alone!  “UNRAVELED” is a Bible Study that deals with these questions:  What happens when our world falls apart? How do we press onward when our tightly-knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity—or the path we’re on— comes undone? What if all of this is not the end we fear it will be? In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope—with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined. Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed.

This study explores 12 stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations.  THIS WEEK’S LESSON: “The Conversion of Saul to Paul” (Acts 9:1-20). This is a “carry-over” from last week’s lesson – unanswered questions! Pastor Karla hopes that you will join her on ZOOM, Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM for about an hour of sharing in this study.  All lessons can be received separately, without loss of continuity – So join as you can!  Printed copies of the study guide are available in church office.  The links to the ZOOM study for Wednesday at 6:30:

GLOBAL NEWS: ‘Service of Lament’
challenges church on racism

An unflinching, hour-long “Service of Lament, Repentance, Communion and Commitment” went online June 24, putting The United Methodist Church on record as committed to a renewed push against racism.“ The Council of Bishops and every church agency within our denomination are working together as never before because this call from God and outcry from our troubled world are so urgent,” says East Ohio Conference Bishop Tracy Malone during the video service. “We are acting and moving.” Pulled together in under two weeks despite the COVID-19 pandemic — with footage contributed from 25 different locations — the video features prayer, Scripture and anguished testimony from United Methodists of color. Read more of this story and watch the service on the UM News site.

Worship for 5-31-2020 – Worship Together w/ Crest to Coast

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR BEFORE WORSHIP

WELCOME TO PENTECOST SUNDAY!

Today is a special Sunday, Pentecost! Because Pentecost is the day when there were many, many people in Jerusalem from all over the known world of the time… We are worshipping together with many churches around our district, too! You’ll get a sense of some of the multiculturalism of our time.

This worship video is brought to us through the

South Sound Cooperative

About: Made up of seven vital and unique congregations (First Olympia, Tumwater, St.Andrew’s Lacey, Oakville, Rochester, Shelton, and Steam Boat Island), the appointed clergy staff and lay leadership have been working together for the past three years to create shared ministry opportunities in all areas of church life: worship, discipleship, fellowship, and missions. With help from musicians from all the churches, we offer a hybrid worship experience using Zoom and locally produced music.
Worship Instructions: We are happy to share the good news and celebrate the Spirit at work in us all as one of the worship hubs this Pentecost Sunday. You can join on Facebook, (https://www.facebook.com/FUMCOLY – scroll down until you see the post) or if you prefer, visit the First Olympia YouTube site at 10:00 AM, May 31.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAWlw6qN_o-zTvto0wkonQw

If you have come in at a different time, the video will be posted and remain there for you to use at anytime that fits your schedule.

During the worship the cooperative churches include a children’s sermon, and at the “offering” time they leave a moment with music for you to make decisions about how to give to your own church. For Chehalis UMC, this information is below in the “Announcements/Soundbites” section that follows on this page.

Offerings and Contributions
(when no plate is being passed)

Checks mailed to CUMC at P.O. Box 417, Chehalis, Wa, 98532 are, as always, welcome!

You may now, also, make a contribution by using the DONATE page on our website, by PayPal or a credit card.  The site gives an opportunity to designate a portion of your check to a specific fund, by making a notation, if you like. And yes, there is a 2.2% fee for each transaction, but this is the easiest way, or the only way some of us have to give remotely (some people don’t use checks!) Don’t let the fee stop you from giving, if this is the best for you.

If you use your bank’s bill-payer for other organizations, why not make a monthly contribution to the church that way !?

Thank you, for remembering the work of the church goes on even when we can’t be together in person!
