WE ARE IN A SERMON SERIES: “The Covenant People: Old Testament Matriarchs and Patriarchs”
July 2 – Abraham and Sarah: “On the Sacrifice of Children” – Genesis 22:1-14
Sermon Teaser: Products of the Canaanite culture, Abraham and Sarah were willing to sacrifice their firstborn, and God was clear that this was no longer desired, and was never required in worship of Yahweh.
Human sacrifice is illegal is all civilized places in the world. But… has there ever BEEN a time when children did not die because of the beliefs and passions of their parents?
Who will God send to save the children from being sacrificed?
June 9 – Jacob and Esau: “Sibling Rivalry” – Genesis 25:19-34
- BEGIN WORSHIP WITH FAVORITE HYMN-SINGING
Isaac’s twin sons were born only moments apart, Jacob “grabbing onto the heel of his brother” as they were born. Yet, the tradition of “primo-geniture” called for Esau to get the greater inheritance and be the new Patriarch of the clan. In this saga we find Isaac and Rebekkah playing favorites, and siblings building barriers between each other that will last decades. What example are they to us and our children today?
July 16 – Jacob in Exile: “Dreamer” – Genesis 28:10-19a
Jacob leaves home after his father’s death, fearing for his life! The vision on a troubled, sleepless night alone, shows him that God wants to be with him, and possibly changes his attitude toward his life and the world he lives in. This is the dream known as “Jacob’s Ladder,” but is really God’s ladder between heaven and earth.
July 23 – Rachel and Leah: “Love and Deception” – Genesis 29:15-28
Jacob while in exile from his angry brother, lives with his kin and finds someone to love. There is a strange exchange and he ends up having the wrong bride! He will work for 14 years to have the woman he loves. What does this kind of deception teach us?
July 30 – Jacob and Esau: “Wrestling with God” – Genesis 32:22-31
- BEGIN WORSHIP BY SINGING YOUR FAVORITE HYMNS
Do we wrestle with our own sub-conscience… With an angel… With God… during the challenging moments in our lives? How do we know what God is calling us to do and be in these circumstances?
