There are many opportunities to be part of a small group ministry at Chehalis UMC.
Sundays – Following Labor Day to Memorial Weekend
9:30 AM – Faithlink in Boadway Hall – current topics discussions change often, as the news brings issues to the forefront. Topics have included: Sustainable planet, women in ministry, poverty… Potential topics to come? Talk to James Van Ornum. You can suggest current event topics, too.
7:00 PM – Book and Bible Study Group in the Parlor. Talk to Kathy Westergard about the current title and topics. Reading and discussion are on the agenda.
7:00-8:00 PM – Angel Beats Ensemble – This group is mainly for our teenagers, but we often need adults to fill in! If this schedule fits your needs better than Wednesday night rehearsals and you enjoy being around young people, maybe you are one of those “fill-ins.” Check with Leslie Durham. The ensemble is in recess during the summer.
Thursdays (twice a month)
6:30 PM – Thursday Evening Potluck and Bible Study – This group currently is studying the book of Acts, using a study guide. Come join in on 2nd and 4th Thursdays. This group meets in homes, so be sure to contact Mary Dahlstrom to get the scoop on where to go on a given week.
6:00 AM – Men’s Group meets now at RIBEYE Restaurant just off of the Rush Road exit in Chehalis/Napavine, for a Dutch-treat Breakfast and/or coffee with conversation and fellowship. Men of the Church and community are welcome to join them every week, or as often as you can, just by showing up! For more information contact Stan Long.
Join a choir! The adult Bell Choir, “Voices in Bronze” meets at 6:00-7:30 on Wednesday nights to rehearse, and usually play on the 4th Sunday of the month at the 11:00 worship service. The “Chancel Choir,” our adult-ish (high schoolers, too) vocal choir meets for rehearsal on Wednesday nights at 7:30-9:00 for rehearsal, and sing most Sundays at the 11:00 worship service.
ALL CHOIRS RECESS DURING THE SUMMER, as soon as our time changes to 10:00.
11:30 AM – Fourth Friday Women’s Lunch Group – Meet monthly at Sweet Inspirations in downtown Chehalis. Any woman of the church is invited to join them for Dutch-treat lunch, conversation and celebration of birthdays! This group is for fellowship and fun!
Numerous other groups meet formally and informally for various purposes. Here are just a few.
Missions and Outreach Group – meet monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5:30-6:30 in order to plan for projects that range FROM loading backpacks with nutritious food for at-risk kids on the weekends TO sponsoring a stop-over place for Seattle-to-Portland bikers in the summer TO planning a fun activity for kids TO planning a concert and dinner for adults. You are welcome to join in the group just by showing up to the meetings. Bring ideas to enhance the outreach ministry and visibility of Chehalis UMC, while doing God’s work! Gospel Mission Outreach Group – This group meets at the Gospel Mission every 4th Saturday from 8:00 AM – Noon to serve a brunch (served 8:30-11:00) to the clients (many homeless) of the mission. You may join in by showing up to help serve or by contacting Jean Long about providing a panful of good food for the morning!
Stephen Ministry – Our group of trained Stephen Ministers meet quarterly on the 1st Monday of January, April, July and October, to compare ministry notes (confidentiality is kept), and make plans for how to improve care of members and others in the Twin Cities area. This is a trained group, who have a connection with persons who are experiencing loss, illness or other needs. They provide a listening ear and help to bring hope and healing on a regular basis to their persons. If you are interested in being trained as a Stephen Minister please contact Kathy Westergard or June Butler, our coordinators. Also, contact Kathy if you have a temporary or long-term need for a spiritual caregiver, and she will assign connect you with one of the Stephen Ministers.
United Methodist Women – This group is in transition to finding a best meeting time. Currently (until further notice) the time is the 2nd Thursday at 1:00 PM. The group is mission-oriented, doing such things as preparing meals to distribute when a member is ill or going through a long-term medical treatment, fundraisers for mission, or putting together sewing kits, clean-up kits for disasters, etc., to send to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). They plan activities for women year-round, both social and missional.
AA Group – A.A. Men’s Group Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 PM – 12-step support group in this building! These are confidential meetings, of course. Please check online with the organization, or show up for a meeting. Come to the double doors off the parking lot (behind the church), proceed down the stairs and at the bottom turn to the left.
The church is open to hosting another 12-step group, if more would like to form.
